Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
